A breath-taking recreation of the eruption of Pompeii in 79 AD. The story is told through known eye-vitnesses (such as Plinius) as well as invented characters.
Even though I was reading the story out loud as a good-night tale, I
still finished it in three or four days. Page-turner
is
definitely an appropriate description of this book. Read it! The quotes
from various vulcanology text-books are helpful, but I still feel like
reading up a bit on the background.
I got this book for my twenty-fifth birthday (1997.02.21). It's really good. (Otherwise it wouldn't be in this list.) Red Mars is the first of three books about the colonialisation of Mars. - I hope to get to read the other two soon.
From the cover:
Addendum: I have read Green Mars and Blue Mars too. They continue the story in the same fine style.
